Is Tanzanite a Birthstone?
One question we get here from many customers is if Tanzanite is a birthstone. If you look at what people search for online, you can see many searches for things such as "tanzanite birthstone jewelry"...along with rings, pendants, earrings, necklaces and more. Many people also ask for Tanzanite when purchasing a piece of jewelry for a December birthstone baby. So we ask Steve, is Tanzanite really a birthstone?

Hi, I'm Steve Moriarty from Tanzanite Jewelry Designs and moregems.com. The question today is tanzanite a birthstone? The birthstone list started with the breastplate of Aaron, on which there were 12 stones representing the 12 tribes of Israel. Later this became the basis for the 12 month birthstones, and one of those birthstones was called jacinth, which is a brown zircon. Similar to this, not exactly like this, actually browner and less pretty. This is actually heated, and jacinth was a natural unheated stone, so it was brown zircon, and later they discovered that brown zircon could be heated and become this beautiful blue. So then we started accepting the blue form of zircon as the birthstone. Another birthstone for December is turquoise.
In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association named tanzanite as a birthstone for December. This is the first change on the birthstone list since the early 1900s.
