Short answer: yes, if you want something meaningful, rare, and unforgettable.
Long answer: Tanzanite isn’t the “default” engagement stone, but that’s exactly why it can be such a powerful choice for a marriage proposal.
While we think it is one of the most amazing stones on earth, and that is why we only sell it, Tanzanite is actually one of the rarest gemstones in the world. It’s found in only one place on Earth, a small region at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. We have actually been there. You can see details of our trip here. That alone makes it incredibly romantic, a single-source gemstone for a once-in-a-lifetime commitment.
Visually, tanzanite is a stunning colored gemstone. It’s famous for its deep blue violet color and natural pleochroism, meaning it can show flashes of blue, purple, and even burgundy or red depending on the lighting. No two stones look exactly alike. Making it even more special.
For many couples, that uniqueness matters more than tradition.
Tanzanite is often associated with the following:
Transformation and new beginnings (marriage)
Deep emotional connection (couple getting married)
Intuition, truth, and spiritual growth (growth as a couple)
That symbolism aligns beautifully with a proposal, especially for couples who see marriage as a partnership, not just a milestone in their life.
This is the most important practical question. We receive it all the time.
On the Mohs hardness scale:
Diamond: 10
Sapphire: 9
Tanzanite: ~6–6.5
That means tanzanite is not as hard as a diamond, but it is absolutely suitable for engagement rings when set correctly. We have customers that have multiple Tanzanite rings and never run into issues.
Choose a more protective setting (halo, bezel, or diamond-accented prongs)
Avoid ultra-thin bands
Remove the ring during heavy activity (gym, yard work, lifting)
Clean gently, no ultrasonic cleaners. That is very important! Don't use a home ultrasonic cleaner and if you take it to a jeweler to be cleaned, make sure they don't either.
Many couples opt for a tanzanite engagement ring and a diamond wedding band, or reserve the tanzanite ring for daily wear with mindful care.
Why choose Tanzanite?
More unique than a diamond. Less of them available as well.
Significantly more color and personality than a Diamond.
Larger, higher-quality stones for the same budget, even cheaper most times than Diamond.
Feels personal, not cookie-cutter like the other couples you may know.
Why some still choose diamond
Maximum durability for the wearer.
Cultural tradition.
“Forever” marketing narrative has been pushed for decades.
Neither choice is wrong. But if your partner values individuality, artistry, and meaning, tanzanite often feels more intentional than a diamond.
A tanzanite engagement ring says:
“I didn’t choose this because everyone else does. I chose it because it’s rare, like us.”
