Tanzanite Price & Tanzanite Value (Updated: Dec 2018)

Carat Weight - Tanzanite Prices Per Carat (Updated Dec 2018)

Currently carat weight has less value affect on tanzanite than on other gems like ruby, sapphire, emerald or diamond.  If Tanzanite One Group gets more control of the market they have plans to change the pricing structure more like that of diamonds which are more affected by size and quality.  China has been showing more interest in Tanzanite and with the vast market in China growing demand could have dramatic effects on the price and availability of Tanzanite. We are currently in 2018 seeing the following approximate price breaks in our inventory.  Prices of Tanzanite change quickly and dramatically. These are our approximate selling prices in the first chart and our actual prices verses those of our online competition in the second chart.

October 2018 Update: The price of high quality material has started to rise as the Tanzanian government attempts to stop smuggling out of the mining area and the country. To do this the military has built a wall completely around the mining area. They will attempt to have all trading of rough handled through a government office within the mines. Much of the rough  was smuggled into neighboring Kenya and exported mostly to India for cutting. With disruption of normal channels we expect the price of tanzanite to continue to rise.

What is the Price of Tanzanite in 2018?

The current price and value for Tanzanite changes based on the weight. Tanzanite showing a noticeble green component will be worth significantly less. For richly colored AAA Tanzanite, 1ct is approximately worth $300-$425 per carat. 2ct sizes reach $450-$650 per carat. 3 carats and up will reach $650-$750 per carat. The changes taking place in Tanzania makes tanzanite a very good investment stone. Other factors affecting value include the depth of color, quality of color in daylight and in incandescent lighting, the clarity of the stone, the type of cut, quality of cut and polish, the demand and the current supply of Tanzanite in Tanzania, which is maybe 50% controlled by the Tanzanite One Group. We are currently developing a new grading system for tanzanite which we have begun to incorporate in our newest tanzanites basing the overall quality rating from 0-1000. A video explaining this grading system will be available soon.

Prices Per Carat Vs. Competitors

The following tanzanite price table is based on a comparison of  finer triple a, (AAA) tanzanites which include stones with intense, vivid and exceptional colors from seven of the top ranked tanzanite sites on a google search for tanzanite gemstones.  The stones compared were selected for the appearance of finer color and high clarity.  Because of the limited availability of fine cut gems, cutting quality was not part of the criteria for comparison although we feel it is as important as color and clarity.
Prices are based on size ranges with the highest and lowest per carat price or the seven top competitors as well as the average price of all stones sampled are compared to the comparable stones on our website. The number of stones compared in the sampling is also listed.  Not all of the sites compared had stones in each size category with a AAA quality. Only in the smallest sizes under 3/4 carat are our prices higher due to higher quality cutting which reduces yield and increases labor costs.
