Mermaid Tanzanite: What is It?

by Steve Moriarty October 25, 2023

What is Mermaid Tanzanite?

A rare unheated, natural Tanzanite that has a pastel violet/blue/green color. These Tanzanite stones are called mermaid Tanzanite and are absolutely amazing looking. The mermaid tanzanite stone normally has a sparkly cut and brilliant finish.

"Mermaid Tanzanite" is not a well-known or widely recognized term in the world of gemstones or jewelry. Tanzanite is a gemstone that is typically known for its striking blue to violet-blue color. It is a variety of the mineral zoisite and is often used in jewelry, particularly in rings, earrings, and necklaces. But even with "Mermaid Tanzanite", not being very common, there is a specific color scheme that this type of Tanzanite represents.

Mermaid Tanzanite Example

While this color scheme is rare, Moriarty's Gem Art recently traveled to Tanzania where they were able to bring back many Tanzanite gemstones with this unique color scheme. The production of this color doesn't happen very often. Normally once every decade or so. We were fortunate enough to be in Tanzania a few months after a pocket of this color was mined (see our video going into the Tanzanite mines here), which enabled us to purchase a large amount of smaller rough to cut back at our shop in the United States. We are currently cutting many of these green-mermaid colored Tanzanite and will be releasing them as we complete them. Because our cutting is some of the best in the world, it takes some time to release new gemstones, especially Tanzanite. If you are looking for this mermaid-colored Tanzanite and want the best possible color, make sure to keep this page book marked or reach out to us, so we can contact you when our next Tanzanite gemstone of this color is cut.
