Where Does Tanzanite Come From: D Block Tanzanite

by Steve Moriarty October 24, 2023

Where Does Tanzanite Come From?

Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania within a small 4 kilometer area of land near Mount Kilimanjaro and Arusha. The mining area is in the Simanjiro District of the Manyara Region and is separated into different mining blocks.

Speaker 1:

All right, we're here with Sunni Marisheki, and we're going to explain A, B, C, and D Blocks of this Tanzanite mining area. So Sunni, your mine is in D Block. You want to point out where D Block starts and ends?

Sunni Marisheki:

Yeah. D Block starts from there. There was a Tanzanite one mining there.

Speaker 1:

So up by the tower?

Sunni Marisheki:

Of the tower, if you see the big tower there.

Speaker 1:

Yes. So that used to be Tanzanite one and no longer?

Sunni Marisheki:

No longer. Yeah. So from there is Block C, and then you come D, B, and D. You can see the way it's started from the place called Carol, not Carol, it's going to the place called OPEC. The OPEC means not the company of oil, but Tanzanite because production was like oil. That's why the people call-

Speaker 1:

So OPEC.

Sunni Marisheki:

... like OPEC. So this is Block D and this is called Carol. This area, it's Block D in Carol.

Speaker 1:

And Carol is the mountain up here?

Sunni Marisheki:

Carol is the mountain there down. There's a lady called Carol was wanting this area. That's why they're called Carol.

Speaker 1:

So C ends somewhere between us and-

Sunni Marisheki:

Block D.

Speaker 1:

Block D ends somewhere between here and those towers.

Sunni Marisheki:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

And then B and C are beyond it?

Sunni Marisheki:

Beyond it, down [inaudible 00:01:54].

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So they run side by side?

Sunni Marisheki:

Side by side. Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Further beyond those towers.

Sunni Marisheki:

Beyond those towers.

Speaker 1:

All right. Thanks, Sunni, for a great trip. Michael and Jeff got to go down in the mine like I've done a few times. I skipped it this trip. But it's great to see where Tanzanite actually comes from.

Sunni Marisheki:

You are welcome.
